Race Sponsorship 2012

Organisers of the Jack Bloor Races are very pleased to announce continued support from three local businesses.

Smoooth will be sponsoring the Junior Races. Smoooth is a popular Café & Deli at 14-16 Wells Road, Ilkley. This is close to the town centre on the main route up to Ilkley Moor. website

The Ilkley Brewery Company will be sponsoring the Senior Race. In its third year of production this award-winning company is now well established in new and larger premises which are helping to meet ever-increasing demand for its popular ales. Explore more at www.ilkleybrewery.co.uk

Terry Lonergan of Complete Runner is a long-standing sponsor of the Jack Bloor Races and a generous donor to the Jack Bloor Fund. Complete Runner is a specialist running shop with branches on Leeds Road in Ilkley and also in Nelson, plus online at www.completerunner.co.uk

FRA Rule changes

From 2012 the Fell Running Association requires all fell races ‘run under FRA rules’ to use metric measures to describe distance and climb.

All U18 competitors require the signed consent of their parent or guardian to enter races. This includes U18 competitors running the Senior Race. Parental consent may be provided by:

·  Signing the Jack Bloor Junior Registration form at the event, or

·  Downloading and printing the Jack Bloor Junior Registration form which may be signed in advance and brought to the race, or

·  Downloading, printing and signing the FRA Parental Consent form which can confer consent for an extended period of time. The Jack Bloor Junior Registration form will still need to be completed but it does not need to be signed if the signed FRA Parental Consent form is presented.

U18 competitors in the Senior Race must use the Jack Bloor Junior Registration form and comply with the same procedure above.

2011 Race Reports

Recent downpours failed to slow the field of over 200 runners in an exciting 26th annual Jack Bloor Race on Ilkley Moor. In a dramatic finish the leading pair in the men’s race pressed the 5.2 mile course record hard – only to see it stay out of reach by 5 seconds! Graham Pearce of Pudsey & Bramley won in a time of 38 minutes 9 seconds with Ilkley Harrier Tom Adams hot on his heals and just 2 seconds behind. Next came the two Leeds City AC runners of Chris Birchall and Greg Hull. Greg won the veteran over-40 trophy and remains the current course record holder. Ilkley Harriers’ Ian Rowbotham retained his first place in the veteran over-50 class.

Not to be outdone by these seasoned fellrunners two youngsters featured in the top ten places. In a time of 40 minutes 35 seconds Fred Slemeck of Leeds University just squeezed ahead of Ilkley’s Alex Sinclair to take 6th place overall and win the Arthur Dolphin Under-23 trophy. Presented by Ken Peart on behalf of the Gritstone Club this recently introduced trophy commemorates Arthur Dolphin, climbing partner and friend of Jack’s. Members of their Gritstone Club have manned the Jack Bloor Race checkpoints for over 25 years.

Laura Martin of Otley AC improved on her 2010 time by almost 2 minutes to come 47th place overall and to win the women’s race in a time of 48 minutes 31 seconds. Club mate Renee Saxton took 2nd place whilst 3rd position went to Ilkley Harriers’ Emma Barclay.

In her first senior race, Florence Haines of Ilkley Harriers came 79th overall and won the women’s Under-23 category in an impressive time of 53 minutes 22 seconds. The ladies veteran trophies for over-40 and over-50 went to Carol Evans of Settle Harriers and Ilkley Harriers’ Val Kerr.

The team competition was won by Pudsey & Bramley with Bingley Harriers and Ilkley Harriers vying for 2nd and 3rd positions. The winning women’s team was Ilkley Harriers.

The Jack Bloor Race not only provides for challenging competition by hardened fellrunners but also attracts a large number of local runners some taking on the course for the first time. Thanks to generous sponsorship by the Ilkley Brewery Company every runner in the senior race was presented with a well-deserved bottle of locally brewed  Jack Bloor Ale. Presenting the beer, co-founder of the Ilkley Brewery Company, Stewart Ross, said, “This is the second year we’ve sponsored the Jack Bloor Race and we’re proud to be associated with such a challenging event that honours Jack’s memory”.

Class trophies were presented by Terry Lonergan of The Complete Runner whose longstanding support for the Jack Bloor Races and Memorial Fund is greatly appreciated. The Jack Bloor Fund supports young people engaging in outdoor pursuits.

Now in their 10th year the junior Jack Bloor Races saw a record entry of 121 runners. Children tackled courses of half a mile, one mile or 1.5 miles in one of five age-based classes (U16, U14, U12, U10 and U8). Some were out to beat their rivals or improve on a previous time. Others were simply there to enjoy the occasion with several experiencing their first fell race.

Some extremely close finishes saw Amelia Gibbons just pip Evie Graves over the line to win the U8 girls race whilst Freddie Ziegler took first place in the U8 boys race just ahead of Ilkley Harrier Ben Morley. Running the same half mile course the first U10 girl was Bethan Morley of Ilkley Harriers whilst Logan Hargraves-Madhas of Wharfedale Harriers retained his U10 boy’s title. In a field of 35 runners tackling the U12’s one mile course Ilkley Harrier Sarah Pickering was 1st girl, only 4 places and 42 seconds behind the winning boy, James Lund of Keighley & Craven. On the same course, Wharfedale Harrier Ellie Lambert came 4th overall and took the girl’s U14 title with Emile Cairess of Bingley Harriers winning the U14 boy’s race. Despite a smaller number of runners the 1.5 mile U16s race was no less hotly contested. James Hall came home in the lead and Helen Wood took the girl’s title for local orienteering club Airienteers.

Sponsored by Smoooth, the Café and Deli on Ilkley’s Wells Road, every junior runner received a voucher for a free smoothie as a reward for their efforts. The top three boys and girls in each category were also presented with certificates and ‘cookie medals’ by the team from Smoooth.

As in the senior race, class winners each received one of the Jack Bloor Race’s coveted small trophies. Inspired by the wealth of ancient rock art on Ilkley Moor, each year’s small trophy features a unique pattern. The 2011 trophy illustrates part of the Idol Stone.

As ever, thanks go to the many people who helped stage the 2011 races and particularly to Peter Haines who has organised the Jack Bloor Races for the last nine years.

After his win, Graham Pearce said, “This race is an absolute classic and is run in memory of a true Yorkshire hero who did a lot for the sport so I always try and do it. It’s also a great circuit of Ilkley Moor taking in a lot of the landmarks”.

L-R Tom Adams, Graham Pearce, Chris Birchall and Terry Lonergan (Complete Runner)

The Men’s winner Graham Pearce said this about his race:

This race is an absolute classic and is run in memory of a true Yorkshire hero who did a lot for the sport so I always try and do it. It’s also a great circuit of Ilkley Moor taking in a lot of the landmarks, so a great run out.

After the usual fast start to avoid the congestion around the old water pumping station I found myself languishing in about 20th place. I always seem to get caught napping on this race! But I managed to get into the lead up the drag to the Badgerstone, and by the top there were only a few in contention.

From there it quickly developed into a 2 horse race between Tom Adams and me, although Chris Birchall, previous winner, was never far off and I know from history he knows all the lines (it cost me dear last year).  After growing up and living in Ilkley most of my life, and having run on Ilkley Moor pretty much every week for at least the past 10 years you’d think I would have a pretty good idea at the route but I can be unreliable at times. But I managed to find the route OK this year, and Tom and I held Chris off despite a late charge by him towards the ruin at CP5.

I really enjoy the last descent from the ruin and tried to run it pretty hard but I couldn’t shake off Tom, so it came down to a sprint finish at which I just held on.

I was surprised to hear how close to the record we had run, although that was probably more due to the superfast dry conditions rather than superfast running!  It is very dry up there at the moment.

Great race and thanks

Graham

Charlotte Edge – Fell Running 2011

I would like to thank you for the grant that I received via the Jack Bloor fund. This money enabled me to participate in the English Schools Fell Running Championships held in Cockermouth and the Home Internationals for Mountain Running at Llanberis.

The race at Llanberis was amazing an experience, despite my disappointing result. I had had a bad chest infection, which prevented me from training for the two weeks prior to the event. During the race I was still suffering and couldn’t perform to the best of my ability. However, I was pleased to finish the race and be part of the gold medal winning team. It was amazing to represent England and it was also great to be able to compete alongside the Commonwealth Championship races as these are what I am aspiring to win one day.

The race at Cockermouth went a lot better and I was very pleased with the result. I was 5th in a very tough age group and had a better race than the previous year. It was a really rainy day, but it was great to see my friends also have a good race.

Some of the money was also for me to compete in an International event in Murcia but unfortunately the race date has fallen in term time so I will be unable to compete this year. I looked for an alternative and decided to participate in some of the East Yorkshire Fell Races. With a minimum age of 17 I am only just old enough to be able to compete this year. In the first race a bishop Wilton I was the first lady home by some 2 minutes, which has given me a lot of confidence to push my self through to the senior level in future years. It has also proven that i have put my chest infection behind me and that I am ready to compete at the top level again.

During this forthcoming year I hope to achieve my first GB vest and it is with grants like the Jack Bloor Fund that I will be able to compete at more diverse events and hence improve.

Once again many thaks for your support.

Joss Naylor Lakeland Challenge

Robin Britton completed the Joss Naylor Challenge and raised £260 for the Jack Bloor Fund.

Robin said: ‘I am pleased to have ben able to do something for Jack’s memory, even at this late stage in my career – l wish the Fund every success in encouraging more young people onto the hills’

Emma Clayton – WMRA Series – 2011

I would like to say a massive Thank You to the Jack Bloor Fund for supporting me in competing in the WMRA Grand Prix Series in Europe. With the support of the fund I was able to fly out to Italy and France to compete against some of the best athletes in Europe.

Not knowing what to expect from the first race in Italy, I kept my head down, got on with my warm up/drills and stayed completely focused. My aim was to go out hard and continuing pushing hard until the very end. I ended up finishing 2nd, I couldn’t believe it, I was so happy!!

I knew France would be a tough race. I went out hard and pushed up the first climb and continued fast down the short descent. The three girls behind were very strong on the climbs, I ended up finishing in 5th, I was delighted. This result combined with the result from Italy now makes me top of the WMRA Grand Prix leader board.

Without the support of the Jack Bloor Fund I wouldn’t have been able to go out to Europe and compete against some of the best mountain runners. Racing out in Europe has given me the motivation and confidence to be the best that I can be on the Mountains.

I look forward to the next round of the WMRA Grand Prix series in Austria later next month. Thanks Again!!

ISF WORLD SCHOOLS ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS
ITALY-PRIMIERO
2011
This year I was selected to represent English schools at the world schools champs in Italy.  I had one of the best weeks of my life…
We arrived in Primiero the event centre on Saturday night. Primiero is a beautiful mountain village in the foothills of the Dolomites. All of the races were in local areas within 15 minutes drive of our hotel, The hotel Tre Ponti. From our room we had spectacular views of the famous three peaks that over look the village.
SUNDAY – On sunday we had the chance to train in an area that was similiar to the areas we would be competing in. I trained with the other selected English boys and Josh Jenner our coach for the week. We ran through a few controls then checked out any features we were unsure of. We had the afternoon off and played football with some local boys which was great. In the evening we watched the opening ceremony  and met some people from foreign countries for the first time.
MONDAY – Monday was the day of the Long distance race. Val Canali – Cistri     11th place
I had a great race all except for one control. All my times were faster than Hamish Rogers (another English select boy) up until my mistake and he finished 2nd… My mistake came on the 2nd long leg number 7. All the other controls I planned and executed well. Number 5 was also a long leg and I had one of the fastest times. I didn’t spot number 7 as potentially difficult leg (not looking ahead) and just ran at it… I came out on a parallel path and lost 10 minutes looking for the control then relocating. I was annoyed and didn’t attack the last controls. Finished 11th place and considering my mistake it wasn’t too bad. I knew that if I cut the mistakes I could get in the top five on the middle distance.
TUESDAY – On Tuesday we had a rest and cultural day. We took two cable cars from San Martino Di Castrozza , which took us too a high plateau just a hundred meters or so below the snow covered summit of the Rosetta, a 2700 meter peak. We climbed the short distance to the top along with some of the other national teams. The views were spectacular, we could see the Dolomites stretching for miles into the distance and look down into the valley far below and see San martino along with the area for the friendship relays. The Israel and chinese teams had never seen snow before!!  In the afternoon after a pasta meal in one of the lower cable car stations we descended to the Paneveggio Nature park where we had a guided woodland walk and the chance to see red deer.
WEDNESDAY – Middle Distance Race Val Canali – Piereni         4th place!!
I wanted to do well and knew I could after the long race; I just needed to get my navigation spot on. I made one big-ish mistake about one minute to number 3; I was really cautious then, too low on the control. After that I made a few little mistakes but nothing major. Towards the end of the course I pushed hard but stayed in control of the navigation. I was pleased with how the course went and with the result. 4th place; 5 seconds off 3rd, and 28 seconds off 1st! Well done to Harry Butt another England boy who finished about 30 seconds behind me and came 5th. That evening each country had to create a cultural store for everyone to look around and experience foods and things particular to each nation.
England cultural stall with the girls from New Zealand
4th and 5th podium. 4th and 5th on the leader board.
THURSDAY – Friendship Relay.
The Friendship relay was a great way to finish the week on a high. The previous evening we had been paired with two people from different countries to create a mixed ability team. Between the team you had to collect 40 controls, 8 of which everyone had to punch together. This meant sharing out the controls so you all would meet up at the same time at each compulsory control. I was paired with a Latvian girl (who spoke no English or French) and a French girl. It was great to practice my French and learn some Latvian! The last four controls we had to complete together, it was wonderful running through the streets lined with fans then holding hands and racing down the finish. We came 49th out of 160 teams which wasn’t bad but for me it was all about mixing with people from across the world. That evening the English select boys and I were on the podium for coming 3rd after the middle and long distance race times were added up. In the end everyone in the England team went home with a medal. After that there was a closing ceremony and a party which lasted till gone midnight.
I had an amazing time and would like to thank josh Jenner for being our coach for the week and the Head coaches Peter Christopher and Pauline Olivant for all their hard work.
